Il
Divo’s “Mama” is a beautifully sung and beautifully produced song for
mothers who are no longer with us. “Mama” captures all the words we wish
we could have said to our mothers when they were still with us, so if
you’re remembering your Mom this Mother’s Day, you can play this song
while knowing she’s in a better place and watching over you.
Ashley Tisdale (as Candace), “I Love You Mom” from Phineas and Ferb
Kids, looking for a song that will capture how you feel, but still represent who you are? Look no further than Disney Channel’s “Phineas and Ferb!” The first season featured an episode where Candace, the boys’ elder sister, sings a song to their mom as part of an open-air tribute. And even though Candace sings it as a birthday present, voiced by Ashley Tisdale, best known for her role as Sharpay in “High School Musical,” it’s still very much appropriate as a Mother’s Day song because of the sentiment.
Moms who have to raise their kids alone deserve a double dose of thanks in a world that appreciates – but never fully enough – their sacrifice and dedication to their family. American rock band Good Charlotte’s “Thank You Mom,” expresses a special thanks to single moms who did it all. This midtempo track is anything but sentimental; with the solid strumming of its acoustic guitars and the heartfelt albeit nasal delivery of lead singer Joel Madden, “Thank You Mom” hits the nail on the head: “you were my mom, you were my dad, the only thing I ever had was you, and I thank you. I love you, I’ll always love you.” Wow, right?
Carnie Wilson, “A Mother’s Prayer”
Carnie Wilson may be one-third of best-selling 90s girl group Wilson Phillips, but when she released a Mother’s Day album, “A Mother’s Gift: Lullabies from the Heart,” in 2006, she was clearly speaking from her heart. The harmony-drenched ballad captures eloquently the feeling of every mother, and when she sings, “I hope these words are something that you’ll treasure, and you’ll get the chance to whisper them to children of your own,” whip out the tissue, because Mom will start to weep.
Jim Brickman, “A Mother’s Love”
Jim Brickman is the king of syrupy, piano-laced ballads, and on “A
Mother’s Love,” he teams up with Canadian classical singer Mark Masri,
who squeezes every ounce of emotion out of this gorgeous ballad. Masri’s
voice is powerful and beautiful, and Mom will believe him – and you! –
when she listens to the power line, “You gave me roots to live this
life, and I learned to dream because you believed in me.”
